How to avoid harmful chemicals in cosmetics while you’re pregnant
Your best defense is to read the label.
I admit it, that’s a hassle when you don’t have a degree in chemistry.
To ease the burden, here are a few ingredients that are easy to pick out.
Avoid these chemicals while you’re pregnant.
Retinol is a blessing and a curse.
It’s one of the best wrinkle-removing solutions on the market. But it’s also one of the most dangerous for an unborn child (1).
Retinoids are related to Vitamin A. And high doses of vitamin A cause fetuses to develop deformities.
Even topical retinoids might put your child at risk (2).
Talk it over with your doctor, if you like.
In the meantime, skip products with these words on the label:
- Retinol, Retin-A, Tretinoin, Retinoic Acid, Retinol Palmitate, Retinyl Linoleate, and Differin (adapalene)
There are other terms as well. Check with your doctor or pharmacist to confirm the safety of any product in question.
Soy isn’t a danger to your child. Instead, it may cause discoloration of your skin.
It may contribute to melasma, a type of hyperpigmentation that occurs during pregnancy.
Take a pass on eye cream if it lists lethicin, Phosphatidylcholine or soy in it.
Bergamot smells fantastic. But it contains a chemical called bergaptene.
This chemical can make you more susceptible to sunburn and hyperpigmentation.
Hydroquinone is a skin lightening agent that fades acne scars and sun damage.
Unfortunately, quite a bit of it absorbs into the skin from the surface.
Although there are no studies that prove it’s harmful to pregnant women or their babies, it’s smart to keep away from it for now (2).
These are four potentially risky ingredients that you might encounter in eye creams.
As I prepared the reviews for today, I took the time to check the label on each one. At the time of writing, and with the best information available, I only included products that lacked the above components.
Top Pregnancy-Safe Eye Creams
Belli Skincare Eye Brightening Cream
Belli’s eye cream is my top pick for pregnant women.
It’s made by an American company that takes skincare during pregnancy very seriously.
They don’t include parabens, dyes, fragrances, or other harsh chemicals.
Therefore, you can enjoy their products while you’re pregnant and afterward while you’re nursing.
The cream feels especially nice on puffy eyes if you store it in the refrigerator.
It’s fortified with vitamins B3 and K to firm and moisturize the skin.
Just one small drop relieves bags and dark circles.
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Gel Eye Cream
Neutrogena’s eye cream was tested by ophthalmologists for safety.
It contains one of the world’s best moisturizers: hyaluronic acid. This ingredient attracts and holds up to 1000 times its weight in water.
Next, the non-greasy formula has dimethicone to soothe redness and seal in moisture.
The cream sinks in fast and goes well under makeup. It’s free of artificial dyes, fragrances, and oils so that it won’t clog pores.
Burt’s Bees Eye Cream
Burt’s Bees achieve the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance for this eye cream.
It’s perfect for sensitive skin.
Also, it’s been tested by ophthalmologists and dermatologists.
It’s a 98.9% natural moisturizer enriched with aloe and rice extract. These refresh the skin under your eyes and diminish puffiness.
Cetaphil Hydrating Eye Gel Cream
Cetaphil’s eye cream has a threefold solution for the problem.
First, there’s hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin. This makes fine lines less noticeable.
Second, licorice extract brightens dull skin and reduces discoloration. It makes tired eyes look brighter.
And third, multivitamins nourish the skin to prevent premature aging.
Like all products from this company, it’s been tested by dermatologists.
CeraVe Eye Repair Cream
CeraVe’s eye cream is accepted by the National Eczema Association as a product for sensitive skin.
It’s non-comedogenic and allergy-tested. There’s not even an artificial fragrance in it.
Like other moisturizers from this manufacturer, it features ceramides.
These essential components strengthen the skin and help it stay hydrated.
There’s also hyaluronic acid to increase moisture.
Finally, niacinamide repairs damaged skin and soothes redness.
Beauty by Earth Under Eye Cream
Here’s an eye cream that comes with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. If you don’t love it, you can get a full refund.
It’s made with the best natural and organic anti-aging ingredients. The goal is to make your eyes look awake and feel refreshed.
Ingredients like aloe, cucumber, coffee, and pineapple moisturize, fix puffiness, and erase dark circles.
Simple Soothing Eye Balm
Simple’s balm, if you’ll pardon the pun, provides uncomplicated relief for your eyes.
It moisturizes the delicate skin there with hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, and shea butter.
It alleviates puffiness and dark circles with bisabolol and vitamins B and E.
It won’t bother sensitive eyes or contact lens wearers. And it’s free of allergens like dyes and artificial perfumes.
Aveeno Absolutely Ageless 3-in-1 Under Eye Dark Circle & Anti-Wrinkle Cream
Aveeno’s label is a little more complicated to interpret as it lists several complicated chemical names.
Fortunately, it doesn’t appear to contain any of the no-no components.
Instead, it conditions the skin with vitamin C and E plus a blackberry complex that’s packed with antioxidants.
The idea is to help your skin develop more collagen and elastin and reduce wrinkles naturally.
Aveeno says that it’s been tested by ophthalmologists and it’s non-comedogenic, too.
Eau Thermale Avene Soothing Eye Contour Cream
French company Avène bases its eye cream on thermal spring water and mineral oil.
It has other soothing ingredients like bisabolol, hyaluronic acid, and Vitamin E.
Moreover, it’s free of soy, parabens, and fragrances.
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Ultra Eye Cream
Those with ultra-sensitive skin can benefit from the Toleriane eye cream.
It fixes dry and uncomfortable skin in an instant.
Fourthly, it’s free of perfumes, drying alcohols, parabens, and other preservatives. It’s packaged in a way that prevents contamination during use, too.
The first three ingredients are water, glycerin, and squalane. The latter two attract moisture into the skin.
Next, there’s shea butter, a non-greasy natural skin softener.
The formula’s been tested to be safe for allergy-prone skin.
La Roche Posay Hydraphase Intense Eyes
Here’s another eye cream from the same manufacturer. It’s suitable for all skin types and free of artificial fragrances and parabens.
There’s something you should know though. One of the ingredients is soybean protein. That might be a problem if you’re dealing with melasma. Consult with your doctor or dermatologist if you’re not sure.
Otherwise, the positive effects last up to 24 hours. The skin around the eyes is firmer and tighter with less visible bags and discoloration.
Honest Beauty Deep Hydration Eye Cream
Jessica Alba’s Honest Company developed this eye cream without using parabens, phthalates, artificial colors, or synthetic fragrances. There’s no mineral oil in it, either. It’s also cruelty-free.
But does it work well? Happily, users say that it does.
I’m not surprised as it’s rich in beneficial natural ingredients.
For example, it contains rice bran, calendula, chamomile, and other exotic botanical extracts like baobab fruit.
These decrease puffiness and revive dehydrated skin. They make the area around the eyes look younger and firmer.
DERMA E Firming DMAE Eye Cream
DERMA E touts their proprietary Instalift blend for making fine lines disappear around the eyes.
It’s full of antioxidants that improve the appearance of the skin over time.
But there’s also instant relief for tired eyes. The formula has hyaluronic acid for instant moisture and glycopeptides to firm and tighten.
Physicians Formula Refreshment Cucumber & Bamboo Eye De-Puffer
Physicians Formula avoids over 150 harsh ingredients like fragrances. Their products are cruelty-free and designed for sensitive skin.
This isn’t an eye cream as much as it is a quick fix for dark circles and undereye bags.
They recommend keeping the stick in the refrigerator so that it’s nice and cool when you apply it.
The roller lays down a soothing blend of aloe, cucumber, and glacial mineral water.
Clarins Super Restorative Total Eye Concentrate
The Clarins eye balm is popular among mature women.
It smooths crow’s feet and wrinkles between the eyebrows. It reduces puffiness, too.
It’s ideal for underneath makeup, like concealer or foundation.
Use it morning and night to reduce puffiness and lines around the eyes.
ELEMIS Pro-Collagen Advanced Anti-Wrinkle Eye Serum
This eye cream doubles as an eye mask.
It’s a premium beauty product infused with exotic ingredients like Padina Pavonica to make skin elastic and firm.
There’s also blue flower linseed that’s jam-packed with essential fatty acids.
The delicious fragrance comes from aromatics like Rosewood oil and Roman chamomile.
Vichy Aqualia Thermal Awakening Eye Balm
Vichy makes more than one type of eye cream. This one counteracts fatigue and dehydration.
It’s based on mineral-rich thermal water that replenishes the skin with essential nutrients.
It also has hyaluronic acid and Aquabiory. The latter coats the skin to lock in moisture.
The cream is free of parabens and fragrances. It’s just right for underneath makeup.
Vichy Idéalia Eye Cream with Caffeine & Vitamin C
Meanwhile, the Idealia cream does more than simply hydrate dry eyes.
It fixes dark circles, smooths lines, and makes the eyes look rested. It’s an ideal base for makeup.
Since it has both mother of pearl and pigment, it immediately enhances the appearance.
Then, after repeated use, it improves the eye area with regards to texture and color.
Ninety-six percent of the women who tested it for four weeks were satisfied with the way their skin looked.
skyn ICELAND Icelandic Relief Eye Cream with Glacial Flower Extract
Doesn’t Icelandic glacial water sound divine?
It’s one of the ingredients in this eye cream.
The vegan formula caters to sensitive skin. It’s free of petroleum, mineral oil, phthalates, artificial fragrances, and dyes.
It oxygenates and moisturizes the skin around the eyes.
Unfortunately, it has a soy derivative called lecithin. Luckily, it’s one of the last ingredients on the list.
La Roche-Posay Redermic C Pure Vitamin C Eye Cream
Vitamin C does several important things for the body.
Not only does it prevent premature aging from sun exposure, but it also heals the damage that is already present.
Over time, it diminishes wrinkles and discoloration.
This eye cream also contains hyaluronic acid to plump dry skin.
Bliss Eye Do All Things Hydrating Eye Gel
Would you like to look ten years younger?
Then try this gel with a steel roller ball applicator.
Between the caffeine, peptides, and plant extracts, it does a makeover on your eyes.
Furthermore, it’s free of parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, formaldehyde, and other problematic ingredients.
Juice Beauty Smoothing Eye Concentrate
It’s hard to resist an all-natural product like this eye cream.
The list of ingredients sounds like a recipe for something really yummy.
Certified organic carrot and grape juice plus vitamins equal bright eyes. And primrose and linseed oil ensure smooth skin.
The cream comes in a pump top bottle that prevents contamination.
Weleda Awakening Eye Cream
Let’s wrap up with a silky eye cream made with healing plant oils.
Sesame and jojoba strengthen delicate skin while shea butter and pomegranate restore damaged cells and moisturize.
It’s surprisingly not greasy at all.
What’s more, you don’t have to worry about harsh chemicals hidden among the natural extracts.
Repeat customers say that they love how it’s eliminated lines around their eyes.
Eye cream is one of the simplest and most effective ways to make yourself look younger and more energetic.
There are many eyes creams available that are safe to use during pregnancy.
Continue to use your new cream morning and night to see instant and longterm improvements.
